# Operations

Every detect, extract and transform you can put in a workflow, plus relay: what each one returns, its options, and an example.

Last updated 2026-10-24·Also as Markdown:[this page](/en/docs/operations.md)[llms.txt](/llms.txt)

Every operation has a full name, `kind.subject.action`, and goes in the list named after its kind by its short name, so `detect.pii.entities` is `pii.entities` in `detect`. Open a row for its request, its response, its options, the languages it covers and its published figure where there is one, and read [workflows](/en/docs/workflows/) to see how to combine them.

## Detect 7

A detect reads the text and returns a verdict and a score. It never changes the text, and a detect with block can stop the run.

Run `detect.pii.entities` on what a user sent and on what a model produced, before an answer reaches the person who asked. A model with private context in its prompt can quote it back. A `flag` means the text carries personal data, and `labels` names the types found.

The PII transforms use the same detector. List `transform.pii.redact` or `transform.pii.tokenize` in the same workflow to take the values out and still get the text back. A transform next to this detect uses what it found and does not search again.

`detect.toxicity.hate` is one of three toxicity scores from the same model, next to abuse and threats. A policy can block on hate alone and only flag the other two.

A flag is a triage signal, not a verdict. At its default threshold the model still flags a share of clean messages. Set `min_score` for your traffic, and send flags to review before you block on them. This operation is in early access.

`detect.toxicity.abuse` scores insults and harassment aimed at a person. The same model scores hate and threats separately. So you can flag abuse for a support team without blocking the message, and still block on hate or threats.

A flag is a triage signal, not a verdict. Tune `min_score` on your own traffic. This operation is in early access.

Prompt injection hides instructions in user text, retrieved documents or tool output, and tries to take over the model. Run `detect.prompt.injection` on anything untrusted before it reaches the prompt. Set `block: true` to stop the run.

It runs on the same model as `detect.prompt.jailbreak`. List both when a prompt carries untrusted content. There are no published figures for this operation yet.

A jailbreak is role play or another trick that talks a model out of its rules. `detect.prompt.jailbreak` flags it. Injection hides instructions in content. A jailbreak comes from the user directly.

Set `block: true` to stop the run before the model sees the text. There are no published figures for this operation yet.

`detect.secrets.credentials` finds API keys, passwords and tokens pasted into a prompt or a ticket. Set `block: true` to stop the run. Or list `transform.secrets.redact` to take the value out and carry on.

This is an interim detector while we build a dedicated secrets model. It has no published figures, so treat a miss as possible. It does not replace a secret scanner in your repositories.

Declare a `schema` and `extract.fields.schema` hands it back filled from free text, typed and ready to insert. You write no parsing layer of your own.

It works on schemas it has never seen. When the text does not hold a field, it leaves that field empty instead of inventing a value. This operation is in early access.

`extract.language.code` returns the language of a text as an ISO 639-1 code, with a confidence. It stays accurate on inputs as short as three words.

Route on it. Set `routing.by` to `extract.language.code` to send German to one model and Dutch to another. Or put `extract.language.code:de` in a transform’s `when` to run that transform for German only.

`extract.content.topics` names what a text is about, from a fixed set of 36 topics. It returns more than one when the text covers several. Use it to route tickets and feeds. `extract.content.topics:travel` in a transform’s `when` runs that transform for travel only.

The set is fixed, so the operation does not take your own labels. You can use topics in `when`, but you cannot route on them.

Use `transform.pii.redact` before text leaves your system: support tickets, log lines, LLM prompts, or anything you forward to a third party. The operation replaces names, email addresses, phone numbers, and account-like strings with a placeholder, so downstream tools still see consistent sentence structure.

The operation takes two options: `types` (default `["person", "email", "phone", "account"]`) and `mask` (default `"[REDACTED]"`). Redaction is one-way. When you need the original values back later, use `transform.pii.tokenize` instead; it returns reversible tokens.

Tokenize rather than redact when processing must continue on the data - an LLM call - and the values must come back afterwards. Each token is the type plus a hash of the value, like `<PERSON_eb7805d77a13>` or `<EMAIL_33b537052b41>`, and the same value gets the same token in every run on your account. The map comes back in the response as `tokens`.

The map holds real values. Store it with the care the raw text needed, and keep the tokenized history rather than the raw one. Chersus keeps no copy of the map, and the audit trace never includes it. Send an `X-Session-Key` to keep one conversation’s tokens apart from the others. Chersus keeps no copy of that key either. See [the token map](/en/docs/calling-your-model/#the-token-map) for the full pattern.

`transform.secrets.redact` removes credentials from text before the text reaches a model, a log or a ticket. It is the redact action on the same detector as `detect.secrets.credentials`.

It is one-way. There is no tokenize for secrets on purpose, because a secret should never come back. The detector is interim while we build a dedicated secrets model. It has no published figures and does not replace a secret scanner in your repositories.

Chain it after `transform.pii.tokenize` in one workflow when a prompt may carry both people and keys.

Relay is a step in a workflow or a policy, not an operation you call on its own. The detects, extracts and transforms run first, Chersus forwards the cleaned prompt to the model named in `relay`, runs the answer checks on what it said, rehydrates it, and one response carries the result. With a tokenize in the workflow, the model sees placeholders instead of the personal data it found.

It returns the rehydrated answer in `output`, a `relay` object with the provider, model, and duration, the detects and transforms of the run, and the detects on the answer in `relay.detect`. Billing is characters in plus characters out at your normal rate: relay adds nothing, detect and extract stay free, and provided models add provider cost plus 5% as a separate line. Relay adds our own time on top of the model’s, and the audit trace shows both. See the [relay guide](/en/docs/calling-your-model/#relay) and the [gateway guide](/en/docs/calling-your-model/#gateway) for the full request and response shapes.
